Fracking Rights Auctioned Off In Monterey Wine Country

Oil and gas exploration rights to 6,150 acres in 35 tracts of land in Southern Monterey County in and near the Lockwood and San Ardo vineyard areas have been auctioned off by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.

The Monterey tracts are part of 79 tracts, encompassing 17,847 acres of Federal mineral estate in Fresno County, San Benito County, and Monterey County, California,  that were auctioned off on Dec. 12, some for as little as $2.50 per acre.

Wine Executive News premium subscribers can click here for the full environmental assessment report containing maps of all parcels auctioned off in all three counties.

The very last pages of the environmental assessment report contain disappointingly inferior quality maps of the tract locations. Wine Industry Insight, however, used USGS topo maps to better locate the overall Monterey County parcel locations. See page 133 of the report for specific parcel locations.
