Hardys Celebrates 160th Anniversary

Submitted By: Kate Regan, May 14, 2013
One of Australia’s best-known wine brands celebrates its 160th anniversary and marks the start of celebrations, including a number of special launches to commemorate this auspicious landmark.

McLaren Vale, May 14, 2013 – Hardys, one of the world’s most recognized wine brands, marks 160 years since its founding in 1853 by pioneering winemaker Thomas Hardy, one of the country’s very first quality winemakers and exporters, this month.

This 160th anniversary will see new launches and developments for the Hardy portfolio, with special commemorative packaging planned.

In addition, exciting new initiatives are in store for the Hardys product line that will be announced later in the year as part of the brand’s strategic plans to help reinforce Hardys’ position as a leading global brand.

160 years after its inception in South Australia, Hardys is a major player in the world of wine. The Hardys label can be found in more than 80 countries around the globe, and it is the biggest-selling wine brand in the United Kingdom. Currently, Hardys carries the title of ‘Most Powerful Australian Wine Brand’* globally and is consistently ranked amongst the top five ‘Most Powerful Global Wine Brands’**.

The Hardys wine brand is proud to have Hardys brand ambassador William ‘Bill’ Hardy, the great-great grandson of Thomas Hardy, leading the celebrations for this momentous occasion.

“It is heart-warming to see that the vision Thomas Hardy, my great-great grandfather, had in 1853 ‘to produce wines which will be prized in the markets of the world’, remains the guiding principle of the Hardys brand five generations later,” says Bill. “Despite the changes that have occurred through the generations, Thomas Hardy's commitment to quality, flavor and character remains the cornerstone of Hardys' wines today and ensure that even after 160 years the company continues to produce wines that reflect their region and their varietal characters. “That is the testament to the passion Thomas Hardy instilled in all of us for continuing the legacy of producing quality Australian wines for consumers around the world to enjoy,” says Bill.

Tim Matz, Managing Director, North America comments: “The 160th anniversary is the perfect moment to celebrate the longevity and innovative spirit of the Hardys brand. It is also a great moment to remind our loyal consumers why they fell in love with Hardys to begin with and why Hardys is still a leader in the Australian category for over 150 years. We have lots of exciting plans for the brand across the year ahead, and we look forward to keeping Hardys front of mind for many more anniversary celebrations to come.”
