TODAY'S FEATURED WINE
Lewis Perdue's Rating of Matanzas Creek Winery: Sauvignon Blanc: Sonoma County-California: : 2012: United States
When passion and authenticity walk out the door with the owners of a small boutique winery after an acquisition by a huge one, excellence inevitably follows.
The acquired wine becomes just another SKU to be managed by someone who cares more about spreadsheets than making wine.
Matanzas Creek has suffered from that more than most.
This 2013 Sauvignon Blanc was sour, thin, feeble on fruit with a bottled water mouthfeel and the substance of a politician's speech.
And the sting of being over-taxed: $22. Really?
And to show just how out of touch the acquiring winery can be, this is the prize-winning fiction on the winery web site: From Matanzas Creek web site: "Expressive and bursting with aromas of white grapefruit, pumelo, nectarine and lemon thyme, hints of fresh oregano and yellow guava finish out the profile. Crisp in texture with bright acidity, the Sonoma County Sauvignon Blanc utilizes our entire breadth of winemaking techniques to create this beautiful wine."
Really?
Hello Kitty is better connected to reality than that.
REVIEW POLICY:
For winery tasting samples, gifts from friends or family or samplings at a party or event, review it truthfully, but only if I like it. If I have paid my own very-hard-earned money on a bottle, the gloves are off and it gets what it deserves ... whether perfect or puerile.
